THE SCARS OF VELIOUS
Achievements & Everything Else!
Has anyone actually seen this dragon that sleeps? -- Bonzz
These Achievement are for the Scars of Velious expansion.
The Scars of Velious was the 2nd expansion, released December 5, 2000.
Scars of Velious did not actually add any new things to the game, other than:
Later on (2008), "Fabled' versions of some of the group and raid targets were added. These targets are beefed up versions of said targets and dropped enhanced loot as well. They still spawn during the Legacy Anniversary events.
This expansion sold for $19.99. It came with a printed map.

EXPANSION (VISIBLE) ARMOR SETS
This was before expansion related 'Tier' Group and Raid Armor sets. Other than the mismatched / variant gear (dropped, crafted, vendor sold or quested), this expansion did include a number of full 'visible' (matched) Armor sets (helm, chest, arms, legs, hands, wrists & gloves). Not all classes were in the game yet, but some of this gear was modified (or added) after the fact, to include those future classes. Some gear is also race restricted... and there were a lot of them!
There are other 'sets,' but they did not seem to include an item for every visible slot.
Did I miss any? Let me know!

Lore is from / based on Daybreak, Expansion release information and / or Dev / Beta Forum Info.
Scars of Velious Velious is the continent the expansion takes place on, and 'scars' refers to the three (3) deep gouges, or better, claw marks, left by Veeshan (Great Divide). |
Thurgadin The Coldain Dwarves reside in the thriving city of Thurgadin, which can be found concealed behind a frigid waterfall in The Great Divide. Considering its hidden location, it should come as no surprise that the city was built with protection in mind. To enter Thurgadin, you’ll have to cross a massive bridge that spans across an icy (and deadly) chasm. |
Icewell Keep This impressive underground palace is the residence of Dain Frostreaver IV, the leader of the Coldain Dwarves. If you want to earn the trust of the Dwarves, his highness and his council will enlist you with helping them eradicate the Frost giants from Velious. If you show up to the palace with less than pure intentions (and get caught), you’ll be cast into the pit in the center of the council’s Great Hall. This pit is inhabited by the most violent creatures in Velious, and exists for the sole purpose of killing off enemies of the Dwarves. It does a fantastic job of fulfilling its purpose – you’ll want to avoid it at all costs. |
Kael Drakkel Just beyond the Eastern Wastes is Kael Drakkel, the home of the Frost giants. Though they do not fight amongst each other, giants themselves are split into different factions. The undeveloped Kromrif, who reside closest to the Wastes, wage a primitive war against the Coldain dwarves. The Kromzek live deeper within the city, and instead focus on a constant conflict against the Claws of Veeshan. Any adventurer will want to be careful when entering Kael Drakkel, as the giants don’t tend to take kindly to outsiders. If you for some reason decide to explore the city anyway, you’ll find most of the vendors and storefronts in the heart of the city. Unless you’ve built up a relationship with the giants, you shouldn’t expect them to give you much more than disdained looks. Head south from here, and you’ll find the castle of King Tormax. If you want to work to forge an alliance with the giants, the King and his council will hold the most influence over your relations, but will also be the most difficult to please. |
Skyshrine The massive tower of Skyshrine, where the Claws of Veeshan have made their dwelling. The innards of the tower are a maze of twisted and tangled caverns and stairways that are difficult to navigate, and even more difficult with the threats that of drakes and wurms that lurk around the corners. Though the space is laid out in a confusing manner, the tower is still a grand spectacle, full of elaborate decorations and great halls. The lowest levels of the tower contain a number of merchants who work and live among the dragons. Like the Coldain Dwarves, the Claws of Veeshan are willing to tolerate outsiders as long as they haven’t brought any harm to their kin. Past the merchants’ district awaits an endless ascent up the countless floors of Skyshrine. If you’re able to find your way, you’ll be met by a number of noble dragons who will gladly grant you with the task of slaying the giants in Kael Drakkel. Reach the top of the tower and you may find yourself in the presence of Lord Yelinak, the sole guardian of Skyshrine. He too desires nothing more than the defeat of the giants, and will handsomely reward those who are willing to aid him. |
Temple of Veeshan Below the steep cliffs of the northern scar sits the Temple of Veeshan. This breathtaking temple is home to some of the most formidable dragons on the continent, and contains a number of relics that are historically significant to dragonkin. Unsurprisingly, this means that the temple is well-guarded and difficult to freely wander. The temple’s entrance in the south wing and the Hall of Relics in the west wing are open to the allies of the Claws of Veeshan, and should be relatively safe. To the east, hall of testing is home to aggressive dragons who must be defeated by those willing to show their devotion to dragonkind. The north wing of the temple is the largest, and holds the Vault of Worship, which is off-limits to everyone but the dragons themselves. Inside are a number of incredibly powerful dragons who are not particularly fond of intruders. Managing to defeat these dragons can lead adventurers to boundless riches, meaning that sometimes even those who consider themselves to be allies of the Claws of Veeshan can be overwhelmed by their own greed. |
Kerafyrm’s Lair (The Sleeper’s Tomb) In the southern area of Eastern Wastes, a giant statue of a sleeping dragon marks the entrance to the underground lair known as the Sleeper’s Tomb. In this tomb, the most powerful dragon in Norrath is imprisoned. Guarded by powerful wardens, the dragon Kerafrym rests inside in an eternal slumber. If he is somehow awoken, the world of Norrath is bound to change forever. |
The Wakening Land A lush forest teeming with life and the only part of the continent that isn’t covered in snow. |
Western Wastes Western Wastes lie on the edge of Velious. The Claws of Veeshan consider this land to be sacred, and will not take kindly to adventurers who have not proven themselves as allies. The Wastes also give way to a number of other locations that are important to the dragons, so expect to run into wary guards. |
Chat Font Size (December 6, 2000) Added the /chatfontsize [0 to 5] (default is 1) command. This command will allow players to adjust the size of the font in the chat window. |
Dragon Circles (December 6, 2000) "Dragon Circles" have been fully implemented. In short, you will not be able to receive a teleport to a dragon circle unless you've been to the circle before and carry a soulbound souvenir that spawns at the circle. Please read the updated EQManual_Supplement. |
A new "mini-game" has been added to the EverQuest client. EQGems (aka Gems)is our first effort aimed towards allowing people to engage in different activities while playing EverQuest. Based upon the success of EQ Gems, we may explore opportunities for other mini-games in the future, even some that are multiplayer in and of themselves. Type /gems to play. |

The Warrens (March 14, 2001) Two years ago this Friday, EverQuest was launched, forever changing the course of online gaming. Today EverQuest boasts nearly 360,000 active subscribers, and a two-year retention rate of 65%. Peak usage tops 89,000 simultaneous users with average peak usage at roughly 87,000. The EverQuest community continues to grow daily. We've put up a page on the EverQuest website to help celebrate EverQuest's achievement and to thank our loyal fans. Over the next couple of days we will be posting interesting content from EverQuest's humble beginnings, as well as a few surprises. As part of our two-year celebration, we're pleased to announce the release of "The Warrens", a free expansion zone located on Odus. "The Warrens" is a low-to-mid level dungeon and the home of the Kobolds on Odus. You can patch the Warrens by running the "Optional Patch". In addition to filling-out the continent of Odus, "the Warrens" will also serve as a platform to try out some of the new ideas brought forth by members of the team and the public aimed at addressing some common gameplay issues. We would like to see what options might be open to and enjoyed by the players in the future. The first issue addressed in the Warrens is the problem of higher level characters competing with lower level characters for loot on lower level creatures. To address this issue, in the Warrens, a group that "outclasses" a particular foe will not receive any loot that is MAGIC, LORE, or NODROP. All other loot will drop. "Outclassing" a foe is defined as having a group makeup such that no one in your group receives experience from the kill. This can happen if, for instance, the foe is "green" to all group members, or if the group makeup is of such a wide level range that the system determines the fight was unbalanced using regular experience rules. Any time that an NPC would have dropped special loot and does not due to it being outclassed, a message indicating that the combat was "trivial" will be displayed to the group. As time goes on, we will be implementing new gameplay subsets and adjustments in the Warrens. Please be sure to let us know what you think! |
Plane of Fear & Plane of Hate (March 14, 2001) The Planes of Fear and Hate have been updated as part of our two-year celebration. Adventurers in the Plane of Fear will notice that some high-level foes are now available. Rewards for former "boss NPC's" have been moved down to underlings that are roughly as powerful as the old bosses were. The Plane of Hate has also received a large update, but this one also includes the opening of a previously undiscovered part of the zone, now full high-level expansion-oriented content. Much as with Fear, rewards from bosses have been moved. As part of the Plane updates, we've made several adjustments to Epic quests for a number of classes. Previously, questers of many classes were put in direct competition with regular non-questing adventurers for a few coveted spawns. In these cases, a new step has been added to separate the "Epic Encounter" NPCs from the "Epic Quest" NPCs. For those who are mid-quest, all quest requirements have remained the same. In other words, if you turn the same items into the same NPC, the same reward applies. What has changed is that some components may be in a different location from where you expect them. It is recommended that you check with the last NPC in line or other adventurers to find where you need to go next. |

RUNNYEYE REVAMP - MAY 30, 2001 Runnyeye has been changed. Something is up in Goblin land... Our last patch included an updated Runnyeye complete with new monsters and treasures to be plundered. (NOTE: Changes to the appearance of Pickclaw Goblins and Sporali Mushroom Men; added Blackened Alloy drops...) |
Guild Message of the Day (April 4, 2001) Guild Message of the Day. Guild Officers and Leaders will be able to type /guildmotd to set up a Guild Message of the Day (GMotD). From then on any time a member of that guild logs in they will see the message with the name of the message sender added at the front, so you will know who sent the message. Any guild member will also be able to read the GMotD by typing just /guildmotd and the message will be displayed again. The GMotD will be erased if the server comes down, however. You will have to reset the GMotD when the server comes back up. |
Character Information (April 17, 2001) Added /charinfo command. Currently this command only reports the zone where the current character is bound. We may add further information as things progress. |
Stonebrunt Mountains (August 29, 2001) Located on the small continent of Odus, the Stonebrunt Mountains are rich with vegetation and distinctive hills that give way to the towering Mount Klaw; the largest mountain in Odus and home to the Kerran village of Kejeka. The zone of Stonebrunt is designed to be a mid-level, outdoor zone similar in scope and scale to the Lake of Ill Omen on Kunark, which has proven to be a very popular zone in EverQuest. |

** Project M Implemented ** Tonight we have patched something to the PvP servers that many players have been waiting for. The ability to play that gnoll, orc, or the cute and fuzzy rat. On your character select screen you will notice another button in the upper right part of your screen called "Monster". Clicking this button will randomly place you in a low-level NPC in a random zone. You will be given full control of the creature to do with it what you like. You may hunt and kill other creatures. You may even attack other players. Some things to remember when playing your own personal monster (NPC). You will not be able to interact with players or NPC's other than moving and hitting attack. You cannot speak, trade, sell, or do anything else that a player can do. You will spawn with normal loot for the monster you are playing and Player Characters will be able to kill you for loot and experience. If you are a spell casting monster you might want to take a moment to memorize some spells. Once you die, you will return to the character select screen where you may choose to return as another NPC or play your normal character. You may gain experience, levels, and skills as this NPC, but once you die, it is all lost. You will need to start over the next time you choose to be a NPC character. You can't zone as a monster. Monster PCs (MPCs) can not loot, sell, or gain items. They only get what they start out with. This ability to play a monster is being implemented for PvP servers only as we have no plans to implement non-consensual PvP on a non PvP server. However, we are still working with this system. We may find other ways to implement Project M on the non-PvP servers that are acceptable. We aren't done looking at the possible uses of this new feature. |

The generic strats / info below are from successful raids that I was part of, from research and / or from what I recall. The below info should be adapted, as seen fit, by your Raid Leader. Key emotes may also be noted below. Raid make-up (classes, levels, Player skill levels, etc.) can and do make a difference on raid strategy options and winning or losing. In any situation, Players fulfilling their roles, using assist, and following emotes is always essential. There is always more than one variant strategy that can successfully defeat a raid. As Levels increase, defeating old raids can prove much easier and more forgiving (even as a group or solo / molo, depending on how old the raid event is). However, sometimes, certain mechanics still have to be honored. It has been known that in some events, due raid mechanics, too much DPS; killing MoB X before MOB Y; and similar, can bug the raid and cause it to fail. The below info does not include details on how to complete raid-related achievements. Those are noted elsewhere on this page, if any. Some of these targets may require 'zerging' into the zone get to them (killing stuff along the way). They may also have 'adds' which are often more like trash MoB's that in the general area. The original / older targets / encounters were pre-raid window events. Raids were more of a collective effort, or better, an extremely challenging group event. Any effects noted below often 'scale to level,' so the effects can be lesser or greater than stated, depending on raid force levels. On Progression servers, targets can use 'Mitigation of the Mighty' (mitigates Spell Damage, Melee Damage and absorbs DoT damage), at least until such time as certain expansions 'unlock' (typically, expansions that are at least seven-plus expansions after the expansion of the related target). While older targets are static open world (non-instance) events, there are now an Agent of Change in various locations that will provide an instanced version of the same event (which are noted below, if any).
Do not forget that many of the old world dragons are 'belly casters,' meaning you need to basically be under them to land spells. Some of these targets were 'beefed' up in 2008 as "Fabled" targets, with enhanced loot drops They can still be found during the Legacy Anniversary events.
If I missed anything or got something wrong, let me know!
