SERPENT SPINE
RANK TWO & THREE SPELLS
The Serpent Spine expansion changed how new high level spells worked and are obtained.
This time, for Paladins, the basic spells are vendor purchased. They don't come cheap either, as it will cost you upwards of 15K to buy all the Level 71 to 75 Serpent Spine spells.
These spells carry normal names and do not have Rk. I (Rank One or Level One) as part of their name. These spells can be upgraded to Rank II and Rank III.
Unlike before, where spell upgrades meant that you got a better spells with a different name at a higher character level, this time you actually upgrade (slightly) the spell itself (they do not require a higher character level to cast them).
You can obtain and memorize a Rank II or even a Rank III spell before you have the lesser versions. This means you can and will skip over the lesser versions, as Rank II and Rank III spells will overwrite (replace) the lesser versions of the same spells. Your spell gems will update as well (automatic).

THE QUEST
1) SUNDEROCK SPRINGS: You re looking for Inquisitor Harona (Level 75).
Harona is located mid-zone, left (west) of the river, on top of the fortified mountain at the Drakkin camp.
Harona sells all fifteen (15) of the Level 71 to level 75 Paladin spells.
You can get them all at once, or return after each new Level you gain.
Luckily, there is a bank here.
.
2) RANK II SPELLS: Each of the 15 spells has a Rank Two upgrade.
The only thing you need to upgrade each spell, is the Rank II spell scroll.
These spell scrolls are basically just random drops from trash MOB's in the various Serpent Spine zones.
They are tradable, so you can also obtain or buy them from other players.
Once you have a Rank II spell scroll, simply memorize it into your spell book, as normal.
The Rank II spell will overwrite and replace the original base spell, in your spell book.
Your spell gems will update as well.
.
3) RANK III SPELLS: The Rank III (Rk. III) spells are quested, in a manner of speaking.
You need to obtain a Glowing Obsidian Rune (No Trade, Magic, Weight 0.1).
This item is drops off of Serpent Spine "raid" MOB's.
NOTE: As a Level 90 / 5.5K AA with high end House of Thule group gear and a top level cleric mercenary, I was easily able to solo Pyre Lord Narseekin (Level 80) in Direwind Cliffs, who drops one Glowing Obsidian Rune every time.
.
4) ASHENGATE, RELIQUARY OF THE SCALE: You are looking for Kalim'Kar the Gold (Level 70).
After you zone in, he is located to the furthest most eastern edge, outside the doors you see.
You can hail him and follow along, or just hand him the Glowing Obsidian Rune to receive a Rank III spell.
You will be given the spells in a certain pre-set sequence.
The order that the Rank III spells are are awarded for Paladins, is:
Sacred Touch
Absolve
Challenge for Honor
Gleaming Light
Fenegar's Mark
Sacred Cleansing
Brell's Stony Guard
Wave of Forgiveness
NOTE: While other webs sites clearly suggest the existance of the remaining rank three spells (Sacred Force, Lesson of Penitence, Burst of Sunlight, Armor of Unrelenting Faith, Sworn Protector and Remorse for the Fallen)... after you turn in your eighth Glowing Obsidian Rune, will not giver you any more spells. The rank three Cure Corruption spell is awarded to Druids and Shamans in their hand-in sequences, but not Paladins, oddly enough. In short, I am at a loss on how the remainign spells are obtained, if at all. If you know, please drop me an e-mail!
.
5) Once you have a Rank III spell scroll, simply memorize it into your spell book, as normal.
Just as before, the Rank III spell will overwrite and replace the Rank II (or Rank I) spell, in your spell book.
Your spell gems will update as well.
